Funny story...

I wasn't originally selected to perform in the Bar Burner Showcase at Tassels Off.

I got the call as an alternate and was asked to bring something epic. Something memorable. Something fun. Something uplifting.

Without hesitation, I knew exactly what routine I was bringing.

My Brown Skin Girl routine.

My love letter to Blackness. My celebration of African pride. The act I pull out when it's time to remind the world that I'm here.

When you see me, see us.

This routine has always meant so much to me because it represents something bigger than myself. Every time I step on stage with it, I'm carrying generations of beauty, resilience, culture, and excellence with me.

Now, did everything go according to plan?

Not exactly.

The wrong music was played, which cut about a minute from my act. One of my biggest reveals never happened. And to top it all off, I performed the entire routine on a broken pinky toe.

But here's the thing...

None of that changed the message.

I still showed up. I still showed out. I still stood proudly in my melanin.

Because representation isn't about a perfect performance. It's about being seen. It's about taking up space. It's about reminding every little Black and Brown person in the audience that they belong here too.

I walked off that stage feeling strong. Feeling proud. Feeling like I had accomplished exactly what I came to do.

When you see me...

Lately, I've found myself reflecting on several experiences that, at first, seemed unrelated. But the more I sat with them, the more I realized they all pointed to the same pattern.

This isn't about one person or one incident. It's about communication, accountability, and what happens when we focus only on someone's reaction instead of asking what led to it.

I believe we'll continue repeating the same conflicts until we learn to communicate with more curiosity, more accountability, and more grace.

Today's Shelle's Pearls of Wisdom is titled "Accountability Doesn't Start at the Reaction." I hope it gives you something to think about.

Sometimes healing doesn't happen in therapy.

Sometimes it happens standing between two turning ropes.

Joining the 4 and U Double Dutch Club has healed a little piece of the little Black girl inside of me.

Growing up, I didn't have Black friends in elementary school. The only Black kids I regularly played with were my siblings and cousins when we'd visit family. I watched so many parts of Black girlhood from a distance. Double Dutch, clapping games, neighborhood friendships... they were things I knew about, but rarely got to experience myself.

Now, as a grown woman, I get to laugh, play, and jump with a room full of incredible Black women, many of them darker-skinned like me.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't "the Black girl."

I was simply another Black woman.

That feeling is hard to describe. To be surrounded by women who look like me, encourage me, celebrate me, and make space for me has been more healing than I ever expected.

This isn't just about Double Dutch.

It's about belonging.

It's about community.

It's about giving my inner little Black girl something she deserved all along.

And for that, I am incredibly grateful. ❤️🖤

Last night's 4th of July show with the Brew City Bombshells at X-Ray Arcade reminded me why I love performing.

One of the things I'm most proud of is that many of my routines are about 90% improvisation. Every audience member brings a different energy, which means every performance is completely unique. It's always a risk, but that's where the magic happens.

Last night, my participant absolutely understood the assignment. We had amazing chemistry, trusted each other, and created something that was spontaneous, playful, and so much fun. It ended up being one of my favorite performances.

After the show, I told the other producers how proud I am of my growth as a performer. Learning to trust myself and embrace the unexpected has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

Thank you to everyone who came out and shared the night with us.

Now... who wants to see the routine? ❤️🔥

One of my favorite takeaways is seeing so many Black, Latine, and queer educators, artists, performers, and business owners leading this work. From the venues to the presenters, this festival reflects what community looks like when it's built by the people, for the people.

This month, we're proud to recognize Kitty Belle Thee Hoochie Coochie, one of the founding voices of the BE B.R.A.V.E. Movement.
As the founder of Haus of Harlots Burlesque, Kitty has dedicated herself to creating spaces where performers feel empowered to be authentic, take creative risks, and know they belong. Her work as a producer, mentor, healer, veteran, and advocate continues to strengthen Wisconsin's burlesque community and inspire those around her.
When asked what it means to be B.R.A.V.E., Kitty said it best:
"Being brave is having the courage to grow while staying rooted in your integrity. Have grace for who you were, and gratitude for who you're becoming."
